As part of the second edition of the live webinar series “SYMBINAR 2.0”, which focuses on the ideas of Reset, Resilience, and Resurgence we hosted, Mr. Prasad Ponkshe, Vice President of State Street. He spoke on the topic “Future of Asset Management-Focus on Risk Associated and Management”.

Mr. Ponkshe spoke about the history of asset management giving examples of barter system from the past. He stated some historical facts about the various stock exchanges that were found in the early 18th and 19th centuries.

Going forward he discussed the investment banking from the front office, middle office, and back-office point of view, describing each segment in detail and explaining the various activities associated with each segment and how the three are linked to each other.

He stressed the importance of being thorough with the basic concepts of accounting, finance, be it amortization, capital or cost of investment, etc. He discussed in-depth about the impact of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Robotics, emphasizing the fact that AI would be the future of Front Office in the coming years. He also mentioned that trading has become easier due to tools and various methods to do research which would eventually benefit the portfolio managers.

He threw light upon investment strategies like Shariah Funds, Catastrophic Bonds, Tender Option Bonds, Mortgage Dollar Role, Asset Backed Security, and Mortgage Backed Security.

In the next part of the session, he discussed the risks associated with COVID, that involve data security, hacking, phishing, fraud triangle, and data privacy in detail and how placing preventive and detective controls can help the audit managers to protect the risks from occurring. He also touched upon concepts like Operational Risks and Enterprise Risk Management.

Towards the end, Mr. Ponkshe discussed how the possibility of an event happening and the impact of that event happening can be used to prioritize and mitigate risks that could affect the cost-benefit. The Q&A session was very interactive wherein he cleared all the misconceptions and confusion of the students patiently.
